From Red Cross Kansas/Nebraska Region: Beech Elementary School fourth grader, Trinity Sommers, says she “knows what to do” during a home fire thanks to the American Red Cross Pillowcase Project. Trinity and her fellow students spent a morning decorating pillowcases donated for the project by Disney. They learned to place flashlights, radios, batteries, food, water and shoes in their pillowcase and keep it close to their beds. That afternoon, Trinity went home and insisted her mom help fill the pillowcase and talk about what to do if they had a fire. One week later, the unexpected happened. A fire started in her apartment building. Trinity’s mother says her daughter was able to get their family ready for a disaster thanks to the Pillowcase Project. The Red Cross implemented the Pillowcase Project in Kansas starting with schools in Wichita. Volunteers are traveling across the entire state to educate children in grades 3-5. The idea for the Pillowcase Project comes from Hurricane Katrina when survivors packed pillowcases with supplies before leaving their flooded homes. The American Red Cross is proud to honor Trinity Sommers with the Disaster Relief Hero Award.
